No. Holders of a US driving license do not generally need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. A valid US license is sufficient for driving in the UK, and the IDP is not required.
Can I drive a rental car inside the Congestion Charge zone in London?
Yes. London's Congestion Charge zone applies to most vehicles driving into central London between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays (except between Christmas Day and the New Year's Day bank holiday). If you drive within the Congestion Charge Zone, you will be subject to a £15 daily charge (if paid in advance or by midnight of the day of travel, increasing to £17.50 if paid after that). Please note that you can pay the Congestion Charge online by Auto Pay, Transport for London's 'Pay to Drive in London' app or by telephone, but it's important to remember that if you do not pay, you will be fined £180 which your car hire supplier will probably deduct from your credit card.
